AC325: The Jet Heat Resisting Plastic Ashtray.
Date: c1950
Size: Approx. 3 1/3 inches by 3 1/2 inches by 1 1/4 inches high.
This lovely little ashtray has a little story behind it that was told to me by the person I bought it from. Apparently, it came from a U.S. air-force base in the UK in the 1950s where these little ashtrays were standard fittings for the mess halls. Although I cannot corroborate this story, it does make sense - the ashtray is U.S. made, and I would date it to around the early 1950s. It is not made from Bakelite as I at first thought, but rather a heat resisting plastic, as stamped on the underside. It also has the maker's name - the Harry Davies Molding Company, of Chicago. A very pretty, undamaged and by the looks of it unused ashtray.
