ES244: Esterbrook J, No. 2968 Broad Nib.
Date: c1950
Size: Capped - 5 1/8
inches; posted - 6 3/8 inches.
This standard-sized J series Esterbrook is from the very
early 1950s or possibly even late 1940s. This pen does have a
little damage - there is a ding to the side of the cap where the cap
band has been indented. I have taken a close-up photo of it
below so you can see it. It is not immediately noticeable,
and this pen would still make a super every-day writer with its unusual
broad nib. The cap has a stepped black "jewel" within a
chrome plated clip/tassie. There is also a chrome plated cap
band. The barrel imprint is still nice and deep and crisp. The filling lever is also
chromed and undamaged. The pen is fitted with a No. 2968
(broad general writing) steel renew-point. These nibs screw
in and out of the section and are freely interchangeable with other
re-new points and also with the Osmiroid screw-in units from the 60s.
The nib is in very nice undamaged condition.
I have fully serviced this pen. During testing
the nib proved to be a very good example, being very smooth
and laying down an excellent medium to broad width wet line.
Would make an excellent dailoy writer. These Esterbrooks are as tough as old boots!
