Sailor Information on Sustake Bamboo

Susutake Bamboo

The bamboo that forms the cap and barrel of these Bamboo Susutake pens comes from the roof timbers of traditional Japanese houses.  The bamboo rods (poles) are hand selected from special stock preserved and ‘rescued’ from the ‘thatched’ roofs of traditional Japanese houses. The bamboo has been exposed to over a century and a half of  wood smoke rising from the central Cooking fires and up through the roof timbers. Over a long period of time the bamboo has become naturally discoloured creating rich and lustrous brown and red colourations, which are captured in the pen itself. Different wood smoke produces different colour variations in the bamboo surface.  Each piece is totally unique.
